Stop sledging Aussies: Sunil Gavaskar

They fired up David Warner in Adelaide and motivated Mitchell Johnson in Brisbane, now former captain Sunil Gavaskar has implored India to stop the sledging.

苏州半永久

Warner was recalled after being bowled off a no-ball in the first Test, then swapped barbs with the tourists en route to his second century in the match.

Johnson was given a loud welcome to the crease by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the second Test, but the fielders were more subdued after he clubbed 88 off 93 balls.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan also exchanged sharp words with Warner and Shane Watson when the teams walked off at lunch on day four.

India captain MS Dhoni was happy with his chirpy teammates.

“Because you want a bit of aggression in the game … it brings a bit more entertainment for the spectators,” Dhoni said.

But Gavaskar, whose name jointly adorns the trophy the two sides are playing for, disagreed.

The former opener, who scored 10,122 Test runs, suggested his old side reassess their verbal approach after going down 2-0 in the four-Test series.

“The Indians should not get into verbal spats with the Australians … giving it back to Australians wasn’t such a smart idea,” Gavaskar told NDTV.

“We in India, even in club level, are not used to chirping.

“But the Australians, from the very beginning, are getting into these situations regularly.

“It’s really water off a duck’s back to an Australian if you have verbal spats with him.”

Gavaskar added that such run-ins would only serve as distractions for India.

“It will always stay in your mind, even if you are dishing it out,” he said.

“If it is staying at the back of your mind then it is counter-productive.

“I know we have talked about being aggressive but that is about aggressive intent.”

Gavaskar paid tribute to the way Australia “tempered the verbal spats in this series”.

“Especially after the unfortunate Phil Hughes incident. I think there are trying to turn over a new leaf, and that’s how cricket should be played,” he said.

Gavaskar also critiqued Dhoni’s claim that Kohli was not ready to bat on day four, when Dhawan retired hurt after being hit in the nets.

“Let’s not make that as an excuse,” he said.

Holder replaces Bravo as W Indies captain

Barbados all-rounder Jason Holder was named as the new captain of the West Indies one-day squad on Saturday, taking over from Dwayne Bravo who has been axed after his high-profile role in October’s India tour fiasco.

苏州半永久

Holder, 23, will lead the West Indies into their five-game series against South Africa in January before heading the squad at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in February and March.

Bravo was left out of the 15-man squad although he was named in the Twenty20 party for the three-game series, also in South Africa, next month.

“Jason is one of the good, young players who we believe will form part of the long-term future of West Indies cricket,” said Clive Lloyd, the chairman of selectors.

“We expect him to be around for a very long time. He is a young man with a very bright future. We have invested in him.

“The selectors decided that now is the time to make the transition and Jason will have people around him to help and guide him. Some might say it’s close to the time of next year’s World Cup but we know that we have a good one-day team which can do very well.”

Holder has appeared in 21 ODIs and has taken 29 wickets while he has also appeared in one Test and a T20 international.

Dwayne Bravo was at the forefront of the controversial decision to quit the tour of India four matches into a five-game one-day series after a pay dispute.

He was one of the main players who came in for particular criticism when a task force published its report into the debacle last week.

The new-look West Indies squad also features Jonathan Carter, who has received his maiden overseas tour call, and sees Narsingh Deonarine making a comeback after some strong recent performances.

Left-handed batsman Leon Johnson is retained and all-rounders Carlos Brathwaite and Andre Russell are also included in the squad which has the experienced top order duo of Chris Gayle (subject to a fitness test) and Dwayne Smith.

Fast bowling duties will be handled by Jerome Taylor with support from Sheldon Cottrell.

Sulieman Benn is the lone specialist spinner in the ODI squad.

Kemar Roach, who was originally identified for selection, has joined the injury list after being hurt in the West Indies’ innings and 220-run defeat to South Africa in the first Test which ended Saturday.

West Indies ODI squad:

Jason Holder (captain), Sulieman Benn, Carlos Brathwaite, Jonathan Carter, Sheldon Cottrell, Narsingh Deonarine, Leon Johnson, Chris Gayle, Denesh Ramdin, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons, Dwayne Smith, Jerome Taylor; 15th man TBA.

West Indies Twenty20 squad:

Darren Sammy (captain), Sulieman Benn, Carlos Brathwaite, Dwayne Bravo, Sheldon Cottrell, Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle (subject to fitness test), Jason Holder, Ashley Nurse, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Andre Russell, Marlon Samuels, Lendl Simmons, Dwayne Smith.

United’s Falcao on target but gets no guarantees

And while there were no guarantees from United manager Louis van Gaal that the Colombia international would keep his place away to Newcastle United on Dec.

苏州半永久

26, Falcao’s fine 53rd minute headed goal will surely give the Dutchman food for thought.

Former Villa man Ashley Young was involved in the build-up as he hung up an inviting cross for the Colombian to power past goalkeeper Brad Guzan, after Villa’s Christian Benteke had curled home the opener in the 18th, leaving Van Gaal delighted.

“It was a beautiful goal and I liked him (Falcao) today,” he told a post-match news conference. “I’m very happy for him and I’m always happy when Manchester United score.”

When pressed on whether the 28-year-old would start more, he said: “I have to compare every week, it’s always the question for every player. Not only for Falcao but for every player.”

Falcao has struggled for fitness since joining United on a one-year loan deal in the close season from Monaco after a serious knee injury kept him out of the World Cup. Van Gaal said earlier this month he was only fit enough to play 20 minutes.

Despite being pleased with Falcao’s contribution on Saturday, Van Gaal was disappointed with the result.

Third-placed United saw the three clubs below them make up ground in the race for Champions League places and now find themselves a sizeable seven points behind leaders Chelsea and second-placed Manchester City who won the early game.

COSTLY PERFORMANCE

Van Gaal bemoaned a costly performance from his side.

“We dropped two points, we were the better team I think and it’s frustrating when you’re the better team and don’t win these kind of games,” he said. “If we want to be part of the title race we have to win these games.”

On the plus side Angel Di Maria came off the bench to make his long-awaited return from injury, even though the Argentina winger could not inspire his team mates to find the winner.

Resolute Villa defending and United’s generally lacklustre attacking performance helped the home side secure a point after last week’s 1-0 defeat at local rivals West Bromwich Albion as they ended United’s six-game winning streak.

But Villa were unhappy with Lee Mason’s decision to send off Gabriel Agbonlahor in the 65th for a strong challenge on Young.

“We could have won it,” Villa manager Paul Lambert told reporters. “If that’s a red card, we may as well pack up because it won’t be a game of football.

“I spoke to Brad Guzan after the game and he tells me that Ashley Young has admitted he fouled Gabby so work that one out.”

“There’s a good chance we’ll appeal, that’s no red card.”

Israel threatens revenge for rocket attack

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Lebanon’s Hezbollah it will pay the “full price” after missiles killed two Israeli soldiers in an attack that raised fears of another all-out war.

苏州半永久

A Spanish UN peacekeeper was also killed as Israel and Hezbollah exchanged artillery fire – the most serious clashes between the bitter enemies in years – following the attack by the Shi’ite militant group.

“Those behind today’s attack will pay the full price,” Netanyahu’s office quoted him as saying at a meeting with Israeli’s top security brass on Wednesday evening.

The two soldiers were killed when Hezbollah fired an anti-tank missile at a military convoy in an Israeli-occupied border area, the army said.

Seven other soldiers were wounded, but none was reported to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

The UN Security Council called an emergency meeting to discuss ways to defuse tensions between the two sides, who fought a month-long war in 2006.

Israel responded to the Hezbollah shelling with “combined aerial and ground strikes” on southern Lebanon – an apparent retaliation for a recent Israeli strike on the Golan Heights that killed senior Hezbollah members.

The US stood by Israel after the exchange of fire and condemned Hezbollah’s shelling of an Israeli military convoy.

“We support Israel’s legitimate right to self-defence and continue to urge all parties to respect the blue line between Israel and Lebanon,” State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters.

EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini appealed for an “immediate cessation of hostilities”.

Lebanese security sources told AFP that Israeli forces had hit several villages along the border.

A 36-year-old Spanish corporal from the UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon was killed in the exchange of fire, officials said.

It said the precise cause of the peacekeeper’s death was “as yet undetermined” and urged all sides to show “maximum restraint to prevent an escalation”.

Australians urged to be bowel aware

Phil Illingworth thought something was amiss four years ago when he started having stomach problems.

苏州半永久

The Perth grandfather, now 56, went to his GP for a check-up but his symptoms were initially dismissed.

Two years later he went to a different GP. After several tests it was then he was given the news he had bowel cancer.

“I lived with my problem for two years and after two years I had really bad stomach cramps, I couldn’t go to the toilet properly.

“A blood test indicated there was something wrong in the bowels, and with the colonoscopy they found the tumour immediately.

“The tumour had grown very large.”

After three operations, Mr Illingworth is now cancer free. This year about 15,000 Australians will be diagnosed with bowel cancer, which is the country’s second biggest cancer killer.

That’s why Mr Illingworth is speaking about the disease. “The problem is people don’t like to talk about bowel cancer, it’s about pooh and things.

“But once you turn 50 you should be screened every two years. “In between that if you have any symptoms at all then you should go to your GP and ask to be tested.”

A new campaign launched on Thursday is encouraging people to get checked before it’s too late.

Only 34 per cent of women and 43 per cent of men reported having had a stool sample checked in the last two years, a Bowel Cancer Australia survey of 1200 people aged between 40 and 70 years found.

By contrast, 70 per cent of women had been checked for breast cancer and 54 per cent of men had been checked for prostate cancer. Colorectal surgeon Dr Graham Newstead said people need to prioritise testing in the same way they would for other common cancers.

“I would urge people from age 50 to do a test today and repeat it every one to two years,” said Associate Professor Newstead.

“It’s easy and can be done in the privacy of your own home.” When found early, 90 per cent of bowel cancer cases can be successfully treated.

“Bowel cancer often develops without any warning signs,” said Bowel Cancer Australia chief executive Julien Wiggins.

“Regardless of family history, from age 50, all Australians are at an increased risk. People need to be bowel aware.”

Bowel cancer symptoms may include:

* A change in bowel habit

* Blood in the stool or rectal bleeding

* Bloating

* Unexplained tiredness

* Abdominal pain or swelling or a lump or mass in your tummy

* Vomiting

ICC ends Aamer fixing ban

Banned Pakistan paceman Mohammad Aamer vowed on Thursday to prove himself as a “better player and better human being” after his spot-fixing ban was relaxed by the cricket world governing body.

苏州半永久

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has said Aamer, 22, can return to domestic matches with immediate effect, ending his five-year suspension from all forms of the game some eight months early.

Aamer, who was banned for his part in a scandal in which he arranged no-balls to order in a 2010 Test against England, said he was overwhelmed by the ICC announcement.

“It’s the biggest news of my life,” he told AFP by phone.

“It was the most difficult phase of my life but I am sure it’s over now and I am keen to return to international grounds.”

The 22-year-old’s ban was due to expire on September 2, but the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) used discretionary powers to allow him to return to Pakistani domestic games early.

“The ACSU Chairman, Sir Ronnie Flanagan, with the prior approval of the ICC Board and the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board), has exercised his discretion to allow Aamer to return to domestic cricket played under the auspices of the PCB with immediate effect,” the ICC said in a statement.

Aamer, along with captain Salman Butt and new-ball partner Mohammad Asif were found guilty of orchestrating deliberate no-balls in the Lord’s Test against England in August 2010.

The three players and their agent Mazhar Majeed were jailed by a UK court after the now-defunct tabloid News of the World exposed them in a sting operation.

At the time of the incident Aamer was regarded as one of the hottest young bowling prospects in world cricket and there was some sympathy for him, given his young age – he was 18 at the time.

“The ACSU chairman was satisfied that Aamer had cooperated with the ACSU by fully disclosing his part in the matters that led to his disqualification, admitting his guilt, showing remorse and cooperating with the Unit’s ongoing investigations and by recording messages for the ACSU education sessions,” the ICC statement said.

PCB lawyer Tafazzul Rizvi said Aamer will be monitored during his return to domestic matches.

“The ICC code was followed in the process and now PCB will monitor Aamer’s behaviour in the next few months and only after that will he be eligible to return to international cricket,” Rizvi told AFP.

Former captain Ramiz Raja and former PCB head Tauqir Zia recently voiced their opposition to Aamer’s return to international cricket.

PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan had also revealed that some current Pakistan players had indicated they would not be comfortable sharing a dressing room with Aamer.

Aamer, however, vowed to win over the naysayers with his bowling – and promised to behave from now on.

“If anyone has any problems with my return I am sure he will change his views with my character and good performances,” said Aamer.

“My job is to play and do well and I am sure that I will return to international cricket as a better player and better human being and that’s my aim.”

Aamer said he never thought of giving up cricket.

“Cricket is my life and I never thought of leaving it,” he said.

“I have not forgotten how to bowl but now my focus on cricket will be more than before as I have to prove myself again.”

Govt sticking with super tax concessions

Calls for the Abbott government to take the axe to tax concessions to improve the budget bottom line would seem to be a non-starter, at least for the next financial year.

苏州半永久

The Australian Council of Social Service has urged the government to address inefficient tax arrangements rather than make spending cuts in the 2015/16 May budget.

The welfare lobby group wants reform of negative gearing, superannuation and capital gains tax concessions, which collectively cost the budget billions of dollars in foregone revenue.

ACOSS boss Cassandra Goldie said this budget needs to be a lot fairer than the last one.

“The way this can be achieved is by seriously targeting wasteful spending at the top end … instead of pursuing policies that shift the burden on to people on the lowest incomes,” she said releasing the group’s 2015/16 budget submission.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann says everyone will have the opportunity to put forward ideas on how to improve the tax system in this year’s white paper tax review.

But any changes would be taken to the 2016 election.

Furthermore, Senator Cormann said the coalition made a commitment at the last election that it wouldn’t make any unexpected, adverse changes to superannuation tax settings.

“You can’t have government’s continuously chopping and changing these policy settings,” Senator Cormann told Fairfax radio.

“People saving for their retirement need certainty and stability.”

He also rejected an ACOSS proposal to scrap the $6.6 billion private health insurance rebate, saying it is very important all Australians can have timely and affordable access to quality health care.

“The coalition is strongly committed to supporting those Australians who take additional responsibility for their own health care needs,” he told ABC radio.

But he said it is important to get the budget under control so that the nation lives within its means.

The mid-year budget review released just before Christmas showed a marked deterioration in the deficit, partly as a result of a steep drop in commodity prices hitting the nation’s income.

New data on Thursday showed the country’s terms of trade eased further during the December quarter to a near five-year low as import prices outpaced flat exports.

“We expect the terms of trade to slip a little further in early 2015 as commodity prices remain under pressure,” JP Morgan economist Tom Kennedy said.

Record-breaker Sangakkara sets up Sri Lanka win

New Zealand, who won the series 4-2, never recovered from losing early wickets in their chase and were all out for 253 in the 46th over.

苏州半永久

The hosts were reduced to 42-3 in the 12th over and barring a 74-run stand between Luke Ronchi (47) and Daniel Vettori (35) for the seventh wicket, Sri Lanka always looked in control.

Kane Williamson top-scored for New Zealand with 54 while Kyle Mills hit a 17-ball 30 towards the end.

The 37-year-old Sangakkara, who is expected to retire from international cricket after the World Cup, passed Adam Gilchrist as the most successful wicketkeeper when he caught Corey Anderson off the bowling of Shaminda Eranga.

He later added another catch to the tally when he pouched Tim Southee off Thisara Perera, taking his career total to 474 dismissals with 378 catches and 96 stumpings in the 50-over format when he played as a wicketkeeper.

Australia’s Gilchrist achieved 472 dismissals in 287 one-day matches.

“The entire team has been working very hard. The hard work has paid off with some good performances out in the middle,” man-of-the-match Sangakkara said at the presentation.

“I just try to do the basics as well as I can.”

Earlier, Tillakaratne Dilshan (81) and Lahiru Thirimanne (30) gave Sri Lanka a good start, adding 71 for the opening wicket before the latter fell leg before to Anderson.

Sangakkara walked out at number three and then added 104 for the second wicket before Dilshan was out caught by wicketkeeper Ronchi off paceman Southee.

Sri Lanka lost a few quick wickets but Sangakkara held the innings together and brought up his century with a crisp pull shot off Mitchell McClenaghan. The stylish left-hander hit 14 boundaries in his 105-ball knock.

Anderson finished with three wickets for 59 runs for New Zealand.

The World Cup, which is co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia, runs from Feb. 14-March 29.

Smith launches NRL season in Auckland

The event host may have had a “Dave Smith” moment but this time the NRL boss’ words resonated for all the right reasons at the official season launch in Auckland on Thursday night.

苏州半永久

Smith may be prone to a clanger since taking over the NRL, however he exuded cool as he delivered some not so subtle jibes to rival sports while reading his 2015 season address.

But event MC Matt Shirvington was not so lucky, with many swearing he called a certain Canterbury strike weapon Josh Hoffman during an otherwise polished ceremony that ushered in this weekend’s Auckland Nines at Eden Park.

NRL chief executive Smith took his time reading from his teleprompter in front of more than 500 VIPs in Auckland – possibly while still reeling from fallout over confusing Benji Marshall and Ben Barba, coming up with Benji Barba, at the same event two years ago.

But there wasn’t a gaffe in sight as Smith signalled the first NRL season launch in New Zealand and only second outside Sydney.

Indeed Smith did everything right as traditional elders greeted him with a nose-to-nose Maori kiss on-stage before unveiling his bold vision, cheekily describing the NRL program as the greatest in sporting entertainment across Australia and New Zealand”.

“Wow, what a calendar,” Smith said.

“As you’ve seen, it’s a calendar which will take us through the best 10 months of sporting entertainment across Australia and New Zealand.”

But some were left scratching their heads after swearing former Olympic sprinter Shirvington, now the face of Fox Sports’ NRL coverage, mistook Dogs centre Josh Morris for Titans fullback Josh Hoffman during the extravagant launch.

The gaffe appeared to be made while Blues clad Morris strode out holding the Origin trophy representing NSW before the 2015 NRL season was officially launched by new South Sydney captain Greg Inglis and local superstar Shaun Johnson.

But it seemed nothing was going to dampen Smith’s enthusiasm.

“We already know, from our success last year, that nothing can capture big audiences and excitement like rugby league,” he said.

“We’re coming off the back of a phenomenally successful 2014 where we had the top three television programs of the year.

“Origin II was the highest rating rugby league match ever, (with) nearly 4 million people attending matches live at the grounds.

“Our clubs recorded record memberships, more than 250,000 fans signed up to support their clubs – the game has never been stronger.”

Smith added: “But, if 2014 was a spectacular season, 2015 is set up to be even more memorable.

“State of Origin returns to the Melbourne Cricket Ground for the first time in 18 years.

“And to top it off, we’ll have live Sunday afternoon football on the Nine network.

“This is a big game with a big heart and an even bigger spirit – and one heck of a lot of talent.”

Pochettino faces Spurs keeper dilemma before League Cup final

He must decide whether to keep faith with number two Vorm, who has played every minute of the campaign, or give a Wembley spot to Lloris, one of the best keepers in the world and his regular first choice.

苏州半永久

Spurs reached the final with a 3-2 aggregate win over third-tier Sheffield United on Wednesday after a late goal from Christian Eriksen gave them a 2-2 draw at Bramall Lane for his second strike of the night.

Spurs looked set for an overall victory after Eriksen put them 2-0 up on aggregate with a sublime 28th minute free-kick, but United stormed back with two goals in two minutes from teenager Che Adams late in the game to lead 2-1 on the night.

Spurs showed class and character to strike back with the decisive goal after 88 minutes — the fourth time this season Eriksen has struck in the dying minutes of a match to give Spurs a positive result.

But Dutchman Vorm had a less than impressive night after Pochettino kept faith in him despite his late error gifting Leicester City a 2-1 win over Spurs in the FA Cup fourth round at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

Vorm fumbled an early cross which almost led to a Sheffield United goal although he had little chance of saving either of their goals later on.

Spurs go to Wembley hoping for a repeat of their 2008 League Cup victory over Chelsea when they came from behind to win 2-1, which was also the scoreline when they beat them there in the 1967 FA Cup final.

Chelsea beat Spurs 5-1 in the FA Cup semifinal in 2012 in their last meeting at Wembley, though Spurs won 5-3 at home in their latest match in the Premier League on New Year’s Day.

And if Pochettino wants to give his team the best chance of making it three final wins over Chelsea, he might take a leaf out of Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s book.

Petr Cech, backup at Chelsea to first choice Thibaut Courtois had played in every domestic cup tie this season until the League Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool when the Belgian started.

Cech was then restored for the FA Cup fourth-round tie against Bradford City last Saturday but after the third tier side sent Chelsea crashing to a humiliating 4-2 defeat, Courtois returned for the second leg against Liverpool.

The Belgian earned praise from Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers for ensuring Chelsea’s win on Tuesday with a string of superb saves.

NZ man may face death penalty in Indonesia

Indonesian prosecutors have confirmed they will press charges carrying the death penalty against a New Zealand man caught with crystal meth at Bali’s airport.

苏州半永久

Antony de Malmanche, 52, says he thought he was going on his first overseas trip to meet a woman he met online.

Instead he says he found himself diverted to China at the direction of a man claiming to be the woman’s personal assistant.

The man gave him a bag and instructions to fly to Bali, where he would finally meet “Jessie”. Lawyers for de Malmanche say he didn’t know there was 1.7kg of the drug known as ice inside the backpack when he was intercepted by customs in Bali. On Thursday, the invalid pensioner tripped and fell as he was taken to the prosecutor’s office and needed medical attention.

Asked what he expected to happen at trial he said: “To be found not guilty.” Prosecutor Siti Sawiyah says she has received the police brief of evidence including a green backpack and 1709 grams of “shabu”, or crystal meth. She confirmed the Kiwi would be charged with offences carrying a maximum penalty of death.

“We will keep the suspect in detention in Kerobokan prison,” she told reporters on Thursday, adding she hoped a trial could begin as soon as possible. Indonesian lawyer for de Malmanche, Chris Harno, says his client – who spent three years in institutional care as a child – is in poor physical and mental health.

“He suffers pain in his spine and the back of his neck … suffered long ago, but he still feels it now,” he told reporters.

“My focus in court will be to try to get him off the death penalty.”

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has said there will be “no compromise” in executing drug offenders sentenced to death, as part of his determination to stop drug crime. Barrister Craig Tuck, representing de Malmanche, is set to use a groundbreaking defence at trial.

A specialist team of human rights and legal experts from Indonesia and elsewhere will demonstrate that de Malmanche is a victim of human trafficking.

Roosters serious about Nines assault

The novelty of the Auckland Nines has already worn off for the Sydney Roosters – much to their rivals’ anxiety.

苏州半永久

Suddenly it seems the Roosters are very serious about winning what has been billed as the “fun” $2.4 million NRL season opener.

Eyebrows were raised about the Roosters’ initial intentions when they named retiree Brad Fittler in last year’s squad.

And a 42-year-old Fittler proved to be a promoter’s dream thanks to his now famous 70m intercept try in their pool win over the Broncos at the inaugural tournament.

But it seems the Roosters were hardly satisfied after they failed to advance from the pool stage with a 1-2 win-loss record.

Any doubts over the Roosters’ 2015 gameplan were quickly erased when they avoided a mooted move to inject more club legends – either Anthony Minichiello or Luke Ricketson – into the 2015 squad.

And the tri-colours further revealed their hand when they announced both starting halves Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney in a strong 2015 squad.

Still, Roosters assistant coach Steve McNamara thought he would ram home the point ahead of the 2015 opener on Saturday.

“It wasn’t the most positive experience for us last year,” the Roosters deputy and England head coach said.

“We are going to give it our best shot – we are representing our shirt, our club.

“We want to give our best performance and hopefully that takes us a long way in this competition.”

The Roosters’ selection of Fittler appeared to kick-start a Nines “old boys” trend.

Manly veteran Steve Menzies also came out of retirement in the inaugural tournament.

And this year Canberra stalwart Ken Nagas and South Sydney veteran Matt King have dusted off the boots.

But the Roosters hope to start their own tradition by claiming the lucrative Nines trophy with a bulked up squad.

Apart from their dream halves, the Roosters will be bolstered by the likes of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Tongan international Willie Manu and boom youngsters Mitch Williams and Jackson Hastings.

However the controversial Blake Ferguson did not make the Nines cut.

And according to Waerea-Hargreaves – Nines co-captain with Pearce – they may not need the ex-NSW flyer.

Asked about the Roosters bucking the trend and naming their starting halves for Auckland, Waerea-Hargreaves said: “This is their (Pearce-Maloney’s) game.

“They are going to kill it out there.

“I think we can (win the tournament).”

Roosters CEO Brian Canavan injected: “It’s a prestigious event and we are taking it very seriously.”

Sangakkara sets new ODI dismissals record

Kumar Sangakkara rewrote the record books twice as Sri Lanka salvaged some pride with a 34-run win over New Zealand in the seventh and final One-Day International in Wellington on Thursday.

苏州半永久

A graceful century from Sangakkara set up the visitor’s 6-287 before the hosts were dismissed for 253 in the 46th over.

New Zealand won the series 4-2 but Sri Lanka can now take some confidence into the teams’ next meeting, the opening game of the World Cup in Christchurch on February 14.

New Zealand had won eight of the last nine ODIs at Westpac Stadium but nobody could match Sangakkara’s deeds with the bat, his timing and class obvious in an unbeaten 113 off 105 balls.

In scoring his 21st century, the left-hander became the highest run-scorer for his country in ODIs, reaching 13,434 runs to surpass Sanath Jayasuriya.

The 37-year-old then claimed two catches, making him a world leader for wicketkeeping dismissals in ODIs. His 474 scalps are two more than Australian great Adam Gilchrist.

The first catch was a diving left-handed effort to dismiss the dangerous Corey Anderson and send Sri Lanka on their way to a much-needed win.

Sangakkara rated his team’s pre-World Cup progress as more important than any personal milestones.

“The entire team’s been working really hard and the hard work has paid off with a good performance,” he said.

“I think the guys are disappointed that we couldn’t win the series but we were competitive throughout.”

Sangakkara said experiencing gained playing in New Zealand conditions will be invaluable during the World Cup and the Sri Lankans have learned plenty from how the Black Caps play.

New Zealand’s chase began disastrously with the cheap dismissal of out-of-touch openers Martin Guptill and Tom Latham – the latter promoted in place of rested skipper Brendon McCullum.

The struggling Guptill departed on the first ball of innings for second time in the series, and for his third duck, trapped lbw by Nuwan Kulasekara.

Stand-in skipper Kane Williamson’s patient 54 and lively knocks from Anderson (29 off 20 balls), Luke Ronchi (47 off 42), Daniel Vettori (35 off 30) and Kyle Mills (30 off 17) kept the game alive but wickets fell too regularly.

Seamers Kulasekara, Shamida Eranga and Dushmantha Chameera all claimed two wickets, the latter impressing on debut with his pace.

Williamson says late swing undid his team but he was pleased with how his lower order kept them in contention.

“We certainly weren’t at our best but we kept making plays and to stay right in the game until the end was a positive for us,” he said.

“We want to win every game we play but Sri Lanka were outstanding today and outplayed us in all facets.”

Earlier, Sangakkara struck 14 fours and dominated a 104-run partnership for the second wicket with opener Tillakaratne Dilshan (81) after captain Lahiru Thirimanne had departed for 30.

Tim Southee was the pick of New Zealand’s bowlers, taking 2-50 off 10 overs, while allrounder Corey Anderson claimed 3-59 off nine.
